Duke Marine Lab uses Disco to monitor Hurricane Matthew impacts on barrier islands

Hurricane Matthew swept past the coast of North Carolina on the night of October 8th, drenching low-lying coastal areas with intense rain and strong winds. Dr. Dave Johnston and his team at the Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort, North Carolina were prepared for the event – eyeing it as an opportunity to use their expanding fleet of drones to assess how powerful storms contribute to the erosion of barrier islands along the coast.

Using Parrot Disco, the team was able to capture the water cresting over the barrier island, inundating most of a thin strip of sand that is the only barrier between the Duke Marine Lab on Pivers Island and the opening of Beaufort Inlet into the Atlantic Ocean.Read full story
